Summit WM20 Controller
The Summit® WM20 wireless LAN controller is well suited for deployments in small to medium Enterprises as well as in branch and regional offices of large Enterprises. Powered by the same Summit WM software, it offers all the features available in the larger scale Summit WM200/2000 controllers.
The Summit WM20 controller with base configuration can manage up to 16 Access Points (APs). It is scalable to manage up to 32 APs with a capacity upgrade license. For higher availability, Summit WM20 controllers can be paired for 1:1 active-active redundancy. If a controller fails, the APs attached to it will automatically fail over to the backup controller without a need for additional AP licenses. Summit WM20 enables unified services and policies across wired and wireless networks, which reduce network complexity and simplify management.
Summit WM series offers common functionality across all WLAN controllers. With extended roaming domains and fast cross-subnet roaming, it is well-suited for enterprise voice applications. Extreme Networks® wireless QoS solution maintains the correct traffic priority from client to destination. Over the air, latency sensitive traffic is given priority access using either the SpectraLink Voice Protocol (SVP) or 802.11e/Wireless Multimedia (WMM) priority management. Summit WM QoS capabilities include standards-based Call Admission Control (CAC) to manage traffic on the wireless network. With Unscheduled Automatic Power Save Delivery, Summit WM helps extend the battery life of Wi-Fi handsets.
Dynamic Radio Frequency (RF) management automatically sets the optimal channel and RF power settings upon startup and maintains them during operation. Security is a key concern with any wireless installation and Summit WM series controllers offer high levels of authentication, encryption, access control, and intrusion detection capabilities. Combined with wired switches from Extreme Networks, and over 10 years of implementing large-scale enterprise networks, Summit WM is ideal for demanding wireless applications.
Benefits & Features
Summit WM series controllers deliver a high-performance wireless LAN solution that is easy to use and secure. In today’s enterprise environment, dedicated resources are rarely available to build and operate a wireless network. By focusing on ease of installation and management, the Extreme Networks Summit wireless mobility solution helps IT organizations simplify the task of mobilizing their users without sacrificing security or performance.
The capability to support high-speed, cross-subnet roaming allows the Summit WM series to meet nearly any mobile voice or multimedia networking challenge. Summit WM20 offers two Gigabit Ethernet ports and supports up to 32 APs.
The 1+1 active-active controller redundancy is efficient and cost-effective. In the Extreme Networks Summit WM solution, both the primary and backup controllers are active and provide normal service. When a controller fails, the APs managed by that failed controller connect to the backup controller for continued service. The backup controller can support double the maximum number of managed APs upon failover. Unlike other solutions, this availability model is very cost-effective since there are no standby controllers in the network. This reduces capital expenditure on controllers.
- Easy-to-Deploy and Manage — Centralized, system-wide configuration enables fast deployment of APs, comprehensive security and QoS policies, and complete management, monitoring, and reporting.
- Dynamic RF Management — Automatically calibrates channels and RF power at setup and constantly during 24x7 operation.
- Scalable, Voice-Grade Performance — Highest available radio data rate, multiple QoS capabilities for data or voice applications, and Layer 3 roaming and handoffs of less than 50 ms, even across APs installed with different Summit WM controllers. Supports SpectraLink Voice Priority (SVP) protocol for voice handsets.
- Highly Available — Wireless coverage is assured whether an AP fails, a network link goes down, or a Summit WM controller becomes unavailable.
- Secure — Flexible authentication — 802.1x, browser-based login, or MAC addresses. Range of privacy options: Open, WEP, WPA-PSK, WPA v2 with hardware-accelerated AES encryption, and robust access control, allowing users to get the resources they need, but no more.
- Intrusion Detection — Find, isolate and eliminate unauthorized rogue APs and networks.
