Benefits & Features
Graceful Service Expansion and Increased Network Longevity
The four-slot BlackDiamond 20804 and eight-slot BlackDiamond 20808 Ethernet Transport switches together are a powerful combination, with software and hardware commonalities that simplify operations and lower total cost of ownership. Both the BlackDiamond 20804 and BlackDiamond 20808 provide high-density line-rate 10 GbE support today with 120 Gbps IO slots that are ready for future 100 GbE IO modules. Outstanding multicast performance is provided with hardware support for multicast quality of service.
ExtremeXOS® provides fast channel change times, protocol-independent multicast (PIM), Provider Bridges (PB), and Virtual Private LAN Services (VPLS), with the flexibility to add more high-performance protocols as standards continue to evolve. The Hierarchical Quality of Service (H-QoS) engine allows fine-grained bandwidth control on a per-service, per-subscriber, and per-port basis.
Delight Subscribers with Proactive Service Management
Delighting subscribers requires anticipating failures, designing the network to work around faults, and having the right software tools for rapid service provisioning and service assurance. All Extreme Networks switches support resilient Ethernet rings using the Ethernet Automatic Protection Switching protocol (EAPS, RFC 3619), with industry-leading support for sub-tended rings, dual-node interconnect, spatial reuse and fast failover. Easy-to-use service management software provisions and maintains BlackDiamond 20800 series switches with instrumentation enabled by advanced Ethernet OAM&P including hardware support for IEEE 802.1AG continuity fault management (CFM), and ITU Y.1731 for measurement of jitter and latency.
Our Global Carrier TAC and Professional Services Team provides expertise and customized support in every phase of the network lifecycle including assistance in the assessment, design, implementation, operation, and optimization of the network as well as training.
Operational Simplicity Lowers Operational Costs
Common software and hardware modules on the BlackDiamond 20800 series switches reduce the complexity of network operations and lower both training and sparing costs. Additionally, the industry-leading system capacity of the switches supports more subscribers and more high-bandwidth services with fewer network elements, further simplifying network operations. Operational familiarity is also provided through the reuse of SONET/SDH fiber topologies and related operations processes.
A common operating system, ExtremeXOS, simplifies operations by reducing the number of unique commands required to provision a service across multiple network elements, and by simplifying software release management in the field.
Technical Specs
The BlackDiamond 20800 series includes the four slot BlackDiamond 20804 and the eight slot BlackDiamond 20808. The BlackDiamond 20800 series Ethernet Transport switches share common software and hardware elements, lowering the cost of ownership for carriers that need to support both Ethernet access and aggregation for residential triple play, business Ethernet, and mobile backhaul services.
The BlackDiamond 20800 series provides 120 Gbps of switching capacity per slot, enabling high-density line-rate 10GbE today and a path to line-rate 100GbE in the future. Featuring AC and DC power supplies, hot-swappable modules, NEBS compliance, hardware support for multicast QoS and IEEE 802.1AG Continuity Fault Management, both the BlackDiamond 20808 and 20804 support five (N+1) switch fabric cards.
- BlackDiamond 20800 MM: Management module for BlackDiamond 20800 series
- BlackDiamond 20800 XFM-1: Cross bar switch fabric module for BlackDiamond 20808
- BlackDiamond 20800 XFM-2: Cross bar switch fabric module for BlackDiamond 20804
- BlackDiamond 20800 XM-8XB: 8 port 10 GbE IO module for BlackDiamond 20800 series
- BlackDiamond 20800 GM-40XB: 40-port GbE IO module for BlackDiamond 20800 series

Residential Triple Play in Suburban or Rural Areas
Extreme Networks BlackDiamond 20804 Ethernet Transport switch is optimized for Ethernet Access Aggregation, and ideal for suburban or rural residential triple play deployments. In this application, a pair of BlackDiamond 20804 switches in the Access Aggregation central office serves multiple 10G Ethernet Access Rings. Each Ethernet Access Ring serves multiple Ethernet Access central offices. Each Ethernet Access central office is equipped with either a Summit® X450a (for 1 GbE Access) or Summit X650 (for 10 GbE access). In this example, the VoIP softswitch, video content, and Internet access is co-located at the access aggregation central office, but they may also be in a remote data center.

E-Line and E-LAN Services Using VPLS
A common approach to delivering business E-Line and E-LAN services is with Virtual Private LAN services (VPLS). Communications among subscribers will take place as if over a single local area network. Summit X250e or Summit X450a is deployed at the customer premise and Ethernet Access central office, then connected to the VPLS-enabled BlackDiamond 20804 Ethernet Transport switch at the Access Aggregation central office. For carriers with business customers demanding logical separation for each department across the wide area network, E-LAN services allow them to do so using a single physical corporate network. The connections are separated using the 802.1Q VLAN tagging protocol, and traffic flows on each virtual network are kept confined to that network only.

Converged Residential, Business and Mobile Backhaul Service in Metro Areas
In metro areas, regional and global carriers often deploy a stacked ring architecture that adds an Ethernet Aggregation tier to the Ethernet Access Ring Architecture previously described. In this configuration, multiple Access Aggregation central offices are served by multiple 10G Ethernet Aggregation rings from a Metro Core central office. As before, the Ethernet Access central offices are equipped with either Summit X450a or Summit X650 Ethernet Transport switches, and the Ethernet Aggregation central office is equipped with BlackDiamond 20804 Ethernet Transport switches. To this we add the BlackDiamond 20808 to the Metro Core central office.
The BlackDiamond 20800 series Ethernet Transport switches are ideal for high-density deployments. These switches provide high density, line-rate 10 GbE with 120 Gbps per slot switching capacity today—with future hardware upgrade to line-rate 100 GbE modules. The BlackDiamond 20800 series uses the same power supplies, I/O modules and management modules, lowering total cost of ownership by reducing the number of spares and increasing the reusability of components and business processes as networks grow over time.
